Old Budget Template

I have been keeping a budget spreadsheet since 2017. I really enjoy having a budget sheet that I created on excel. It definitely makes me more aware of my spending habits and allow me to see how much I have saved up over the past few years. I would update my budget sheet once every few weeks and when I do update it, I would login to my bank/credit accounts so that I can document my spending in the appropriate categories.

Below is a template of my old budget sheet. Beginning of this year, I created a new but kind of similar budget sheet that I feel is a better representation of my spending. I like it way more than this old template I used for the past 4 years.

Since I get paid bi-weekly, that is why I have an Income 1 and 2 (money after contributing to my 401k through work) section to document my paycheck. Then I split that amount into 4 categories:

  1. Parents/Car Payment --- Money to my parents and to help them with their monthly car payments
  2. Gas --- Money set aside for gas
  3. Personal Use --- Money to use for the month such as grocery, shopping, bills, etc.
  4. To Savings --- Money that will go into my savings account.

In the "Amount Available for the Month" section I add up the total for each section in that month. Then I subtract my spending from the total based on my debit and credit card statement.

The "Total" section is cumulative and based on however much is left from each category in the "Amount Available..." section in the previous months.

"Notes" is just for me to document down miscellaneous things and to account for certain big changes. Like tax return, bonus from work, etc.

In my spreadsheet for my 2017 budget, I did have a section for my student loans. Tracking each time I made a payment and what the remaining balance would be afterwards. It helped me stay on top of my payments.

Definitely recommend keeping a budget sheet to anyone who wants to manage their money/spending better.
